PGDM v/s MBA – The Difference Explained

Ever tried researching about MBA and got confused between MBA and PGDM? They are both management courses. Confused about which degree to pursue? How are they different? Which course is better? Let us try to answer some of these few questions.

Degree and Diploma

MBA or Masters in Business Administration is a degree course offered by the Universities (both Government and Private) and Colleges affiliated to these Universities. Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) is a Diploma programme offered by B-schools/Colleges that are recognized by Government of India’s nodal body for technical education - All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

Admission Procedure and Exam Entrance

For MBA, national level entrance exams like CAT, XAT ETC are conducted. State level exams are also conducted. For PGDM, colleges have the option to choose students from the national and state level entrance exams or conduct their own private exams. Clearing these exams lead to the Group Discussion and Personal Interview round.

Fee Structure

MBA has a lower fees structure as they are mostly provided by government universities. PGDM are mostly by provided institutions so their tuition fees is comparatively higher.

Course Structure

Both MBA and PGDM have the same basic core subjects. The course is rigid and the syllabus needs government approval to be updated in MBA. This takes a long time. In PGDM the course is flexible and updated regularly. Moreover, MBA focuses more on imparting theoretical knowledge and PDGM focuses more on a practical industry specific course education.

Having said that, both MBA and PGDM have equivalent value. Placements are subjected to the university/ college one is enrolled in and the personal capabilities of the individual person. If an individual wants real time business world experience, PGDM is the way to go. MBA has its own legacy and is backed by universities. If your goal is to join the corporate world, then PGDM or MBA makes no difference. What matters is your learning at the B-school.
